Itera helped Moelven identify million-level potential with AI

Can AI create value in something as tangible as modular construction production? For Moelven Byggmodul, the answer is a clear yes. With over 50 years of experience and nearly 160,000 produced modules, the company wanted to explore how AI could enhance quality, efficiency, and competitiveness in a complex construction process. Itera helped them find answers.

About Moelven Byggmodul

Moelven Byggmodul is part of the Moelven Group – one of Scandinavia's leading suppliers of wood-based building products, with over 3,000 employees and annual revenue of around NOK 13 billion. The company specializes in modular buildings and has over 300 employees and an annual turnover of approximately NOK 1 billion.

From gut feeling to opportunity study

Moelven Byggmodul hypothesized that there was significant value potential in utilizing artificial intelligence in the construction process, but needed help to specify if and how AI could truly make a difference. Together with two of our business consultants and an AI expert, we launched a structured opportunity study.

The goal: to identify how AI can reduce risk, improve quality, and increase efficiency in project planning.

What we found

Through a four-week opportunity study involving process mapping, workshops, and in-depth interviews with key employees at Moelven, we uncovered a clear pattern:

  • The current workday is dominated by manual processes and fragmented information
  • Combined with tacit knowledge and high time pressure, this poses a risk of errors – potentially leading to significant costs
The opportunity study resulted in six concrete, actionable, and profitable initiatives, with the use of AI to automatically generate and quality-assure material lists standing out as particularly valuable.

The value is obvious

By automating the generation and quality assurance of material lists, Moelven can reduce errors in both procurement and production – thereby cutting costs related to downtime, complaints, inventory, and unnecessary interruptions in production.

Our recommendation was clear: proceed with the design and implementation of an AI-based solution with an estimated ROI of at least 5x the investment within three years.

AI that makes a real difference

The project demonstrates how artificial intelligence can deliver tangible, measurable benefits. For Moelven, it’s not just about technology but about better decisions, fewer mistakes, and increased profitability.
