Itera achieves ISO/IEC 42001 certification for artificial intelligence

Itera is among the first companies in Norway to be certified according to ISO/IEC 42001 – the international standard for AI management systems. The certification, conducted by DNV, confirms that Itera has robust and internationally recognised processes for the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence.

As artificial intelligence becomes central to how businesses operate and compete, the question of trust is becoming increasingly important. Customers want to know that their AI partner has the governance, processes and accountability to back up their capabilities. ISO/IEC 42001 provides exactly that foundation.

What the certification means

ISO/IEC 42001 is the global standard for the responsible management of artificial intelligence. It sets requirements for risk management, documentation, accountability and continuous improvement across AI systems and their use. For organisations that work with AI at scale, it is fast becoming the benchmark for responsible practice.

For Itera, the certification strengthens an already comprehensive management framework that includes ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 27001 (information security). AI governance is now formally integrated into how the company operates at every level.

AI is at the core of what we do

Approximately half of Itera's projects include an AI component, and all employees use AI tools as part of their daily work. Governance and structure are therefore not optional extras – they are essential to delivering high-quality, trustworthy solutions at scale.

"In working with data, AI and analytics, we see that the most successful initiatives are as much about governance, methodology and accountability as they are about technology itself. This certification confirms that Itera has built robust and internationally recognised processes for the responsible use of AI, and for our customers, it means a secure foundation for business-critical solutions and a more predictable partner at a time when requirements for documented AI practice are becoming increasingly clear. We are proud of this certification – it demonstrates that high quality and accountability are not just values we talk about, but something that runs through everything we do," says Vishal Kaura, Head of AI at Itera.

A structured and proven process

The certification process was conducted in partnership with DNV, one of the world's leading certification bodies. It involved a thorough gap analysis, implementation of new processes and controls, and an independent audit against the requirements of the standard.

"Artificial intelligence is no longer a separate, narrowly defined discipline for us. Roughly half of our projects include an element of artificial intelligence, and all employees use such tools in one form or another. That means we also need a framework that ensures this use is structured, safe and aligned with both customer requirements and society's expectations. Pursuing a certification process with DNV to certify us in accordance with ISO/IEC 42001 was therefore a completely natural step," says Oliver Nemčík, Group Information Security Manager at Itera.

A stronger partner for AI development

For organisations looking to adopt or scale AI, choosing the right partner is one of the most consequential decisions they will make. ISO/IEC 42001 certification gives customers confidence that Itera's AI work is governed by internationally recognised standards – traceable, accountable and built for the long term.

The certification also strengthens Itera's position in international markets and supports the company's ability to meet evolving regulatory requirements, including those introduced under the EU AI Act.
